How many gallons of paint do I need for a room?
Multiply the paintable area by the number of coats and divide by the coverage on the label, often about 350 to 400 sq ft per gallon. A 14 × 16 ft room with 8 ft walls and two coats needs about 3 gallons for the walls.
How do I calculate wall square footage?
Add the wall lengths, multiply by the wall height, then subtract doors and windows. Many painters subtract about 20 sq ft per door and 15 sq ft per window.
Should I subtract windows and doors when estimating paint?
For paint quantity, yes. For labor, many painters don't subtract small openings, because cutting in around them takes time.
Does primer count as a coat?
Calculate primer separately using its own coverage rate. Primer is often needed over patches, stains, new drywall and big color changes.
