Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate roofing squares?

Multiply the flat footprint (including overhangs) by the pitch factor to get the actual roof area, then divide by 100. One roofing square covers 100 sq ft. A 2,000 sq ft footprint at 6/12 pitch is about 2,236 sq ft, or 22.4 squares.

How many bundles of shingles are in a square?

Most architectural and 3-tab shingles come 3 bundles per square. Some heavier designer shingles are 4 or 5 bundles per square, so check the wrapper.

How much waste should I add for a roof?

Around 10% for a simple gable roof and 15% or more for hips, valleys and dormers. Starter strip and ridge cap are often ordered separately.

What should the price per square include?

Shingles, underlayment, ice and water shield, drip edge, flashing, nails, labor, dumpster and your overhead and profit. Tear-off and extra layers are usually priced separately.
